I just need to rant for a minute about the daily use of natural v. artificial light.
I'm constantly looking for ways to use more natural light as less artificial. I don't turn my lights on in my bedroom until well after sun down. I pull the blinds all the way up during the day too maximize my exposure to the sunlight.
Today I walked into my apartment and both windows in the living room had the blinds shut tight and the kitchen light was on and I almost had a panic attack. I dropped my groceries and before taking off my backpack I opened both the windows all the way. I'm honestly getting tense just writing about it. That kind of artificial, closed off lighting makes me feel like I'm going to scream and throw up. Ok so I'm being dramatic. But honestly, WHY?! LIKE HOW DO YOU LIVE LIKE THAT, AND WHY WASTE THAT ENERGY WHEN THERE'S A GIANT LIGHT BULB IN THE SKY THAT WILL DO THE JOB EVEN BETTER.
So you get it: I need natural light to survive. My main point is the following... Last week I started interning at a theatre company that holds rehearsals (usually) somewhere between 12 and 7 every day. Those are ALL daylight hours. And our rehearsals are in a studio in the basement with no windows (duh, it's underground). I didn't realize its effect until today when I walked into rehearsal at 11am from a BEAUTIFUL day and didn't emerge until 5pm. And the world was a totally different place because the sun was in a totally different place, and I felt very disoriented and robbed of something wonderful. I realized this is probably also the cause of my exhaustion this week. Yes the internship is a lot of time and work, but I've been reeeally tired. Spending all that time underground, you aren't able to track the progress of the sun in the sky and time becomes immeasurable, except for by a few numbers on a watch face. Plus, I honestly think the artificial light makes my eyes tired faster. Everyone on the team agrees that it feels we've been rehearsing for months (although 6 days is the truth). Anywho, for centuries the sun was the only clock humanity had!
Ok I'll stop rambling, but here's my thesis: we need sunlight/daylight to function, to maintain a proper sleep cycle, to be healthy. At least I sure as heck do.
